How you define family often reflects the relationships we have with those who may or may not be biologically related to us. Family for many of us goes beyond just our birth family. Family for many of us is changing and with those changes comes conflict, struggle and adjustment. Family often provides us with growth opportunities no matter what may be the underlying conflict. Family ‘problems’ are often hard to name and tesolve. In counselling sessions we foster improved communication and encourage cooperation, tolerance and mutual respect. We frequently deal with conflicts over values, discipline, and behaviour, issue of race and racism and cultural differences.
With the therapist’s guidance and support, the individual learns to better understand personal difficulties which include symptoms of depression, anxiety. We focus on the development of skills to address low self and cultural esteem, indecisiveness, and a general inability to cope with life’s problems and stresses. Our goal is not only to support but also challenge clients underlying beliefs to why life has been so challenging during times of adjustment.
We provide care providers with a comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment of their clients present functioning. With the cooperation of the client and other identified collateral sources our assessment provides a critical and clinical review of areas of a client’s life history. Contextualizing the assessment within the scope of the client’s cultural identity, gender, community supports and over all resources or lack thereof.
Upon competition of assessment our goal is to the care provider with recommendations to facilitate the enhancement of their client’s wellness and lifestyle.
